This was such an important, informative lesson. THANK YOU. I'm not sure I'd ever have gotten my pattern right without all this additional information and demonstration.

Laia - My plan is definitely to do the mittens again. I am going to save the one that is done and use it for decoration. Then I will use a much finer yarn (thanks for the suggestion!) and tiny needles (I think I had used size US 0...I need to check). Having read other people's responses on Ravelry about the pattern, I knew it would be big and my plan was to felt them when I was done. But I really think felting isn't going to give me happy result, so I will try again. That is my favorite pattern - lots of "bling"! :).
Hi Jackie,It's a beautiful and large pattern indeed! I had a hard time while swatching to get the right gauge! Finally I used a yarn from dLana (Spanish producers of rustic merino wool) that I had in my stash and that is called Escorial. It's a reaaaaally thin yarn, 650 meters (I think that's around 700 yards?) in 100 grams. The mittens are looking gorgeous in this yarn but, although they have the correct gauge, they are big. I don't know if they will feel comfortable in my hands when finished, but my boyfriend has tried them and by now they fit perfectly in his hand... I'm knitting with 2mm needles. I'm sure that with a smaller size of needles…
Laia - You do not catch floats when you are using the backwards loop method to cast on your stitches. The aim is to move your yarn across in pattern to cast on the thumb.
This is one of the reasons the thumb gusset is patterned. Just simply cast on drawing that yarn over the top of the next one as I demonstrate within the video. Crossing 5 stitches will be just ok for casting on

Laia...I've made that mitten (well, one of them) and it is a beauty! I think it has ALL the elements. Jam-packed with design. I used Rauma Finallgarn...and the mitten was HUGE. My choice of yarn was a mistake. I am going to make that pattern again but am going to use a finer yarn in the hopes that they are more wearable. And with all the new knowledge from this class, I know I will be happier! I am wondering what yarn you are using and how it is fitting.
